Media: FINE ART PAPER CUTTING
Artist Statement–
In Ryan’s own words: “I first remember toying around with paper in 3rd Grade – folding simple origami animals and cutting snowflakes for holidays. Over time this simple pastime grew into a major hobby and passion that I kept up through the years. I wanted to explore the possibilities of crafting and creating with paper – I made large modular structures, corrugated geometric designs and followed diagrams to fold the most complex creatures I could manage with a single uncut square sheet of paper – the traditional origami standard.
“In the course of this exploration I discovered paper-cutting, the art of cutting colored sheets of card-stock and and layering them into a design. I was instantly drawn to the precision and possibilities that this form of art required and offered and began to teach myself in the summer of 2014. For me the creation of each of my pieces involves both an inspiration and a joy in figuring out how to make an idea work.
“I draw from the details in the world around me – everything from the striations in the barks of different trees to the design of buildings and farms to the patterns of microorganisms under a microscope. Cutting each piece requires hours of careful work with a razor and a cutting mat, but it is in this state of focus and patience that I feel I can best express myself.
“I hope my work will help inspire you to find pleasure in the details around us all.”
