Artist Statement:
In Mari O’Brien’s own words:
“I view my art as a means to explore, discover, experiment, and learn – in other words, as a maker of art, I am an adventurer. My adventures are, if you will, treks into my subconscious – a subconscious informed by previous encounters with people, music, dance, literature, and art–and by my own research into–a variety of human cultures. (I am, after all, an erstwhile academic!) I find that my creative impulses lately have arisen unbidden from this treasure trove of my past experiences, which then combine with my very active imagination and emerge into paintings. Ironically, in spite of the very personal genesis of my paintings, the emotions I strive to express are universal.
“A successful painting, for me, is one that is balanced visually, with which the viewer can experience an emotional or spiritual connection.
“I am an active board member of the Central Coast Watercolor Society, and a signature member of both the International Society of Acrylic Painters and the Utah Watercolor Society.”
