My style is based on the non-objective modern expressionist movement that originated in post-WWII New York. I work in an intuitive manner exploring line, form and color, but without a goal in mind.“My upbringing in colorful India, and my training as a physician and scientist, inspires me to meld colors and shapes on the canvas to create organic forms that spontaneously engage viewers. Gay received a BA in Art with an emphasis in Interior and Textile Design from C.S.U. Long Beach. She continues to take classes in order to explore and experiment with all aspects of the fiber arts. Gay possesses an appreciation of the multifaceted role that fiber has played in the art and material cultures of many ethnic societies, and her creative high comes from the actual process of trying out the multitude of techniques, both old and new available to textile artists today.

Her primary medium is wool but she also incorporates various other fibers into her art. Her work is created both using wet felting and needle felting techniques. “I love the tactile nature of the fibers and their ability to lend themselves to both the realistic and playful. Needle felting allows for sculpting the fibers and creating 3-D pieces which speaks to my interest in engineering and natural forms. It is a wonderful to sit with the fibers and create every day and the added level of joy experienced by sharing with others heightens the creative process.”

This was a privilege I relished as art materials abounded and I was never allowed to be bored. The master sculptors Michelangelo, Rodin and Bernini are my heroes. Because of my fascination with other places, people and animals, it is no accident that Scuba diving is my second favorite thing to do. I draw inspiration from these surreal worlds where science fiction and mythology merge. It is no coincidence that I love to sculpt, as I find living things endlessly fascinating. As a California resident artist, she gravitates toward painting nearby coastal scenes and landscapes from National Parks. While most of her works are studio-based, Hema also paints en plein air whenever possible. An avid traveler and photographer, she spends significant time photographing beautiful landscapes during her travels. These photos often serve as scenic reminders of the places she visits and later become subjects for her studio paintings. When not traveling, you’ll frequently find her painting colorful flowers and critters from her garden. “Painting has always been a form of escape for me,” Hema shares. “It gives me a sense of joy, peace, hope, and a welcome break from the daily commotion of our busy lives. Through these impressionistic paintings, I hope to capture the spirit and beauty of the scene with vivid colors and textures.”
