Artist Statement:
After a successful career in higher education and raising a family, Joan Brown returned to her first passion—fine art. Years of formal training with contemporary artists helped her develop a unique style that reflects what she values and experiences. Her figurative subjects often capture moments of quiet contemplation, while her landscapes glow with light, color, and emotion. Joan’s work in oils and watercolors has earned acclaim in state, national, and international competitions.
“For me, art is still about beauty. We respond to beauty, and whether it serves to calm, to delight, or to inspire, beauty is essential. It is an antidote to incendiary talk shows, dystopian, violent movies, and even pandemics.
The natural world and the fellow species that live with us never fail to leave me in awe. What we artists strive for will be, at its very best, still an imitation of the world we live in. Sometimes I see a scene that lives in my mind, insisting to be painted.
Sometimes, I just have fun and paint a duck.”
