“BRUSH FLYING, INK DANCING”
Artist Statement:
by Jarien de Ham
In Jarien’s own words; “”Brush Flying, Ink Dancing“ speaks to the spontaneous side of Chinese brush painting. When the brush touches the paper, that’s when the magic begins–watching the ink spread and blend. Taking the brush through calligraphy, landscapes, figures and bird and flower paintings is a delight and a torment. Trying to capture form, mood and essence is a continual challenge. If it is easy, why do it?
Living on the central coast for 40 years, I often marvel at how the landscape and atmosphere resemble a Chinese painting. Rather than paint China, I choose to paint what is here before me or in my imagination. Scrolls long ago were made to be unrolled a little at a time, taking a journey of the mind. It’s only ink and paper, maybe a little color, but it takes you places.”
