  FEATURED ARTIST MARI O’BRIEN MIXED MEDIA PAINTING Title: “DREAMS OF AFRICA” Artist Statement: In Mari O’Brien’s own words: “I view my art as a means to explore, discover, experiment, and learn – in other words, as a maker of art, I am an adventurer. My adventures are, if you will, treks into my subconscious – a subconscious informed by previous encounters with people, music, dance, literature, and art–and by my own research into–a variety of human cultures. (I am, after all, an erstwhile academic!) I find that my creative impulses lately have arisen unbidden from this treasure trove of my past experiences, which then combine with my very active imagination and emerge into paintings. From the Golden hillsides to the rugged Coastline, there is an endless supply of subjects to fill the heart of an artist! I count myself very lucky to be able to live here and have been painting with oil on canvas for over 30 years. I’m always intrigued by the essence of light, the luminosity of color and potential for creativity! By utilizing a glazing technique, I apply several thin layers of paint to create a translucent effect that provides depth and emanates light from my paintings. This year I have concentrated my efforts on scenes from Pismo Beach on up through Cambria. Every painting tells a story and mine is very much about the Central Coast!”

In 2003 I moved to the Central Coast from the other coast (Massachusetts). I love the way a short walk here in Morro Bay can take me right to the water, I can pretty much always see it. As long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in art. My parents were both artists, and I loved to draw and paint from a very early age. I lived in New York City in my teenage years, and I went to the High School of Music and Art.
