He later traveled the south and exhibited his artwork of the southern landscape. He graduated from the University of West Georgia with a BA in Art, where he was awarded two Permanent Collection awards from Peter Augustini, a world renowned sculptor from New York, and internationally known painter Donald Cooper. Upon graduation, Spanky began his career as a graphic designer and colorist with a major carpet and textile manufacturer. In the mid-seventies Spanky accepted a designer colorist position in Southern California where he continued to paint and pursue his love of the local land and seascape.  Most recently Spanky has moved to the Morro Bay area where he says “My peripheral vision of the central coast virtually dictates the color palette and brushstrokes onto my canvas.”

I was fortunate to work as a commercial printer in two prestigious photo labs, as well as, an assistant photographer in a high-end fashion studio. Today I work as a chemist and own a small studio and photography business. “My interest in history, both natural and human, informs my choice of photographic subjects. My favorite mentor taught me when outdoors nature tells us about relationships, the cycles of life and matter, organic and inorganic: “just look around and listen.” This lesson still inspires my photographic vision. “I love revisiting deserted buildings, farms, ranches and junk yards over time as they return to nature—the sacred circle. These abandoned places whisper stories of our ancestor’s dreams and lives when we take the time to look and listen. My ambition is to share those impressions.”

And with this search, I find it difficult to fit my photography into one photographic genre.   “In the creation of my art, I use several different types of cameras, but nothing connects me to the spirit of the photographic process like shooting film. I find the beauty of the cameras and their use as much a part of my craft as developing the film and seeing the image to print. To me, my film images have a soul all of their own. “It is truly a pleasure to be able o share with you, a glimpse of the world through my eyes.”

ART LISTINGS—JULY 2017 Featured Artist:  PATRICIA NEWTON Opening Reception:  FRIDAY, JULY 14TH, 2017  from 5pm to 8pm Type of Art:  FINE ART PAINTING Exhibit Beginning:  JULY 1, 2017 Exhibit Ending:  JULY 29, 2017 Location:  GALLERY AT MARINA SQUARE, 601 EMBARCADERO, SUITE 10, MORRO BAY, CA 93442 Event Contact Number:  805-772-1068 Artist Statement:   In Patricia’s own words:   “Art in my family is about as diverse as you can imagine!  While my grandfather utilized his talent, painting freeway signs from buckets of paint, my aunt played violin for the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and was an accomplished oil painter.  Although my foundations in art began to develop as a child, I pursued a full time career and raised a family.  As it turned out, both of my adult children are very talented artists as well. “Elusive as it seemed, art found it’s way back and has become an integral part of my life.  I enjoy painting the motion of surf and sea, and portraits that have some degree of unique qualities.  My style is representational, utilizing a glazing technique of many thin layers to create a translucent effect that provides depth and emanates light from my paintings.”

Bird and Flower painting, one of the four genres of Chinese painting, drew her in. Then came Calligraphy and classes in China that covered Landscape and Figure painting. While we are a long way from China here on the Central Coast, many elements revered in China are here — cypress trees with their irregular balance, foggy atmoshpere, fish and birds which are subjects of her paintings.
