FEATURED ARTIST Lower Gallery:  KIMBERLY HEMPEL FINE ART PAINTING Artists’ Statement: In Kimberly’s own words— “In my home studio, I work mostly with photo references to create oil paintings from my travels. When possible I work plein air to capture the mood of the light. I work from direct observation when possible and from photographic reference when the weather is inhospitable. Working from photographic references allows me to make a record of what I see and spend time in my studio translating that image on to the canvas. My current works feature still life in landscape, and explorations of interior settings as well.”

Instagram post 17920884035460626 Artist: Michael Johnston

Michael’s photography was inspired by an aunt who taught her to develop film and make black and white prints in her darkroom.

At retirement she bought a digital camera, and at a local photography school, learned the basics. With that foundation and at workshops led by accomplished photographers such as Tony Stromberg, Scott Trees, Sherron Sheppard, and others Michael began to focus on her passion for horses. She traveled to Portugal, Colorado, New Mexico and California to capture the beauty, grace, majesty, and lives of these beautiful animals.

Michael’s work centers on photographing horses at liberty in their natural environments, running free. The equine’s unique athleticism, form, grace, and herd interactions are captured at those times.

Michael adds elements, textures and rearranges things to emphasize her interpretation and vision. I hope you enjoy the display of Michael’s photos as much as she enjoys capturing and presenting them to you.

Instagram post 18311430790048550 Artist: Brian Johnson

Brian Johnson received a Bachelor’s degree in Studio Art from California State University Chico in 2015.

Brian Johnson is a passionate artist, known for abstracting reality. His work all originated from snapping photos of reality. Unlike most abstract artists, he doesn’t start from a blank slate. Brian’s work has a distinct and unusual process, but he does not intend for the process of his work to be its narrative. Instead, Brian is goal oriented while working on art, which is unusual given that he is more often a process-first-centered-thinker. Brian is open to experimenting in order to reach surprising and interesting enigmatic artistic ends.

Instagram post 17845084562831233 Artist: Nancy Jensen

Nancy Jensen celebrates the simple joys of living on the central coast of California. In her watercolor paintings she honors the fruits of the harvest in local vineyards, the springtime surprises of bright wildflowers and blooming gardens, the fresh produce of local farms, and the gifts of the sea scattered on local sandy beaches. She recognizes the rich architectural beauty of the historic missions, the patchwork tapestry of the rolling hills, and the quiet pleasures of relaxing at home with a good book and a cup of tea. Grateful to be part of the community in such a stunning natural setting, she strives to capture and preserve the joy in her watercolors.

Nancy came to the central coast as a student at UCSB and has called the area home ever since. From Goleta and Santa Maria to Paso Robles and Cayucos, her family has grown and established deep roots. After a long and cherished career as an elementary teacher, Nancy is now focused on lifelong learning, through travel, reading, art, and time with family and friends. She has studied painting with local artists and instructors, and sees the world differently because of it. With daily practice, she is learning, growing, and finding new insights on her watercolor journey.

Instagram post 17878343774723929 Gallery Artist: Donna Matchette

DID YOU EVER GET TO LIVE YOUR DREAM? MOST PEOPLE DO NOT – BUT I FINALLY AM

Donna Matchette grew up on the California Coast. “I’ve been artistic all my life. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have a pencil and paper in my hand. I gave up a love of art for a more practical pursuit (professional nursing), which wasn’t a bad thing, but I really missed the art I put aside.”

Donna now reflects, “[Since I retired], I now have the opportunity to pursue what I love full time. I have a small studio at my home in Morro Bay, California. I’m happiest with a hammer in my hand and when I can play around with fire. The results are always a surprise!”

“What inspires my work? I want my creation to invite a person to look further– to touch, feel the weight, the texture of surface detail, to see reflected light bounce off facets cut in glass or off hammered craters in metal. This is not a quick production line process. There are multiple steps involved. This can often result in hours poured into the development of a piece.”

“It is thrilling to wake up every morning knowing I get to work at what I love to do. I have dreams at night of new creations and formulations of enamels and how a piece might be engineered to fit better together. I can’t take a walk down the beach or through the hardware store without seeing something that will catch my eye, and I’ll think: “that would make a great design for my next piece.”

Instagram post 17970498043694803 Photographer: Brett Harvey

About Brett Harvey:

My love of photography as well as the outdoors began years ago when I attended high school in LA. In my high school photography classes I picked up some basic skills, spent countless hours working in the darkroom and learned about some of the greats like Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. A couple of trips to the Sierras around that time, and I was hooked on the outdoors. I’ve been exploring it ever since. While my personal travels have taken me all over the world, I continue to have a deep love and appreciation for the beauty of California. My home state has such a rich and diverse landscape, hundreds of miles of gorgeous coastline, both high and low deserts, incredible mountain scenery and grasslands. California’s colorful history is also a source of personal interest to me, especially the early years with its Spanish and western architecture. I’m delighted to share these images from the last few years with you, and I hope that you find something here to enjoy or give as a gift to a friend or loved one.

“I use photography to document the beauty and nature around us. I use photos to draw and call attention to things that people overlook. My work is an expression of the deep connection I feel about the natural world. To me art is something that doesn’t have a simple definition. The main purpose I want to achieve is telling you a story with the images I create. I want my creations and photographs to inspire others to change or pursued their dreams. We are the stories we tell and I hope you enjoy mine.”

Instagram post 17951664314092789 Gallery Artist: Ji Li

I began painting in pastel, watercolor and Acrylic six years ago. In the past year I painted several big pieces in acrylic and fluid acrylic. I like intended color and the freedom feeling I get from acrylic mediums. I have painted birds, flowers, seascapes, landscapes and pet portraits. They have been both realistic and abstract.

Ji Li was born in China and grew up in Beijing. She lived in London UK for 12 years, where she taught Mandarin at Kings College and the UK Foreign Office. She and her husband, the writer Scott Bradfield. moved to California Central Coast in 2016.

Ji was influenced by several of her family members
who were professional artists. She liked drawing and painting from time to time when she lived in London, but went on to develop her painting skills after she moved to California.
Ji is impressed and inspired by Central Coast scenery. She paints landscapes, seascapes, birds, flowers and pet portraits. Her work ranges from the realistic to
the abstract in her preferred mediums of watercolor, pastel and acrylic. Ji was awarded Honorable Mention by Central Coast Pastel Society Juried Show, and accepted by Central Coast Watercolor Society and Moro Bay Art in the Park
Juried Shows. Her paintings have been displayed and sold in Moro Bay Art Association Gallery, Moro Bay Gallery at Marina Square, Pismo Seaside Gallery, and San Luis Obispo Art Central exhibitions. Through her paintings, Ji hopes to express herself to the world.
